Too Close to Judge?

Determining which helmet an incident command safety officer should wear--Does the safety officer have immediate authority to stop or prevent an unsafe act, or do they have to go through the "chain of command"? Very interesting article!

Aah the controversial gray area. First your dept. should pick only seasoned/knowledgable people to be a safety officer hopefully eliminating the second guessing by the IC! Second as mentioned in the rest. fire senario you may not have time to properly go through the chain! We don't live in a perfect world where everything can be done by the book. I agree with Ravenfirefighter also keep in mind that everyone is a safety officer to some degree. IF time permits go through the chain but this is not etched in stone. Don't you just love split second desicions lol.

The safety officer should be in immediate contact with the IC when observing an unsafe situation. If the safety officer shuts down aspect of an operation it could affect the safety of other individuals at the fire scene. The IC should know when an assigned task is not being performed or completed so appropriate changes can be made. If its an immediate danger to the lives of the personnel than the duty duty or incident can be stopped. It's basic common sense, if individuals can keep their ego's in check. All personnel that may be given the duty of safety officer should be required to have taken an approved Safety Officer course. This is definitely not a position where you want to have on the job training

I agree to disagree..there are alot of good points, but on a high risk responce, our saftey comes first. And if i see a problem that could be fatal to any of my team memebers or fellow brothers and sisters, and i tell someone and they decline my response, i dont give a damn if george bush is fire chief i will shut the op. down..i have that right to safety, even if it cost me my life...i will not let fellow members fall for somebody whose head is filled with more hot air than the fire we r on..But thankfully we have not run into something like that before..we have a good chief..

I disagree... Any First Responder can shut down any unsafe operation or practice-Immediately! Safety of the Responders is the 1st Priority! Then comes Property Conservation, and finally Scene Stabilization.

Plant safety and fire safety are usually two different people in our area. The fire scene may use the plant safety as liason but not nessasarily fire ground ops. The two should work together but i understand sometimes don't.

Some good points. As a safety officer, I always try to look at the big picture.
