2009 SAFER Grants Information Guide

While many different types of recruitment and retention activities may be eligible for funding, it is important to link the R&R activity being requested to an identified R&R issue or problem within the applicant’s department. With proper justification, applications for assistance in the Recruitment and Retention of Volunteer Firefighters could include activities that would require as many as four years to complete. There is no local match requirement for this activity and there are no maximum Federal share limits.
Who is Eligible for SAFER Funding?
Your type of organization affects your eligibility for funding. All volunteer and combination fire departments may apply for either or both of the two grant program activities. Volunteer firefighter interest organizations are eligible for funding only in the Recruitment and Retention of Volunteer Firefighters Activity. Career fire departments are eligible for funding only in the Hiring of Firefighters Activity.

Egoolspy, from what limited knowledge i have about this situation, the two big things in recieving these grants is wording and having atleast 10 percent of the grant money you would receive already in your accounts. i hope you get better luck this time, and believe me we all need some , but some need more. God bless your crews and may you all come home from every call.

Our Dept has tried to get grants sense 2002 when we started up. Every year its turned down. We are a small community and thats been used as an excuse even though we have 6 sawmills in out area alone. As a safety officer and community safety educator it gets disheartening when we see Deptartments that have way more then they have to have getting more. It's begining to look like the bailout situation. Those that need it cant have it so lets give it to a Department in someones area so we can have a favor owed to us. Sorry if that seems harsh and unfair but thats the way it looks to us.

The money is slated for fire and rescue- if nobody applies for it the grant is lost. This is not a loan, it is a grant.
