Well first off ill introduce myself, My name is Ty, my friends call me Champ, i just moved from Las Vegas to England. Im 18, 19 in August and have always wanted to become a firefighter. My dad was one when we lived in California in La Quinta. I graduated highschool not too long ago, and will be going to college soon. I took a week long fire training course in the spring of 07 down at my local fire station with some other people my age, and i really felt it was for me, so now im looking more and more into joining but i just have a few questions.

I want to go to college beforehand, but i dont know what courses to take to help me out in the world of fire fighting. Any suggestions?

How do i go about getting the trainin ect. when it is time? Do i just go down to my local station? (Which is about a 3 minute walk from my house)

Im not sure about this here in England, so if anyone knows - Can I voulenteer while im at school? and does the government pay for any schooling?

Thank you for any replies.

Champ.

go to the fire station near your house and ask.

things are a little different in england, they drive on the wrong side of the road and they have a funny language but overall they are nice, look grendal up on the fire link site and se if he can give any words of wisdom. He is one of them. (lol)

You got to do what you got to do, when you got to do it whether you like it or not.

Hi Ty you should contact the Human Resources Dept/Headquarters of your local Brigade, the number should be in a local phone book or the local station should be able to give it to you - they will be able to answer all the questions you have & tell you if any recruiting drives are coming up & keep an eye on the jobs section of the local press

Here in the UK the fire service if you get in pays for the training you need - the training will depend on what sort of shift system you do in the brigade etc. Where abouts do you live - if its in a smaller town or rural area the local cover will probably be retained/part-time which usually means for most of the time you have to give a commitment of 120 hours a week to be available for calls from home & work, attend for weekly/monthly training drills & live within a distance that you ca get to the station within five minutes. If it's a busy area the local cover will most likely be Wholetime where the station is manned 24 hours - the shift patterns are usually 2 9 hour days followed by 2 15 hour nights then 4 days of starting from the 9 am you come of the 2nd night shift.

I'm not sure about good courses to take regarding firefighting before getting in to a brigade or attending college whilst with a brigade - but I would assume this would be easier when on a retained duty system although the college would probably have to sign that you can get out of class should a call come in while your there.

Hope this is a bit of help & any questions mail me
