Why are apparatus put into engine bay backwards?

Backwards.  You mean facing the streets?  That is so they can pull straight out onto the roads when they have an emergency.  It is quicker to be able to drive straight out of the bay.  I hope that is the answer you were looking for.  I may have misunderstood the question.

Thank you for the explanation...and yes I meant backing it in. What is the significance behind the firefighter pushings a new apparatus in the engine bay for the first time?

If I’m getting the question right I think this may be the right answer. The pushing of the engine is a symbolic ceremonial thing. It is from back in the horse drawn pump days when firefighters would unhook the horses and push the engine/pump back into the bay.
