Posted about 1 month ago Tonight was meeting night for one of my volunteer depts. We only have 4 active members to begin with, and our acting chief is out of town. This leaves me in charge. I had three tones sent out, and made a couple of phone calls to make sure everyone knew. Meeting time: 6pm. 6:30pm, I was still at the station alone. 6:45pm, I said the hell with it and came home. The last call this dept. had was a large house, fully involved. 2 people from this dept. showed up, nearby depts did most of the work. Not the first time this has happened. I've tried everything I know to do. I am a member of three other depts, none of which are this short-handed. I've even tried talking members of those depts into joining this one, or at least responding to a few calls with us to no avail. I have given other Firelink members advice on this subject, and have tried all of my own suggestions plus some. I will welcome any advice, but am mainly just blowing off steam. It's frustrating. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I understand your frustration. Our active rositer is 24 people. As the Asst Chief and training officer I sepnd many hours planning training events that i think will keep everyone interested. I hate doing classroom work unless I have to, so most training is hands on. I still only get what we call the "faithful Six" I do get frustrated and feel that my time is being wasted, but then I realize I still have some people to train. I have adopted a policy with the chiefs approval, that if you do not regularly train with the other members of the department, when the big fire happens, don't plan on being on the end of a hose. They will do water suplly or something else. Thankfully we simal page with a neighbor department and have a very outstanding mutual aid run card system for additional resources here, so it does work. I am never short handed. As for advice, all I can say is keep trying and good luck. |

| Posted about 1 month ago We used to be in the same spot several years ago with volunteers dropping like flies or just not responding. We are a combination dept that had just gone through consolidation. One of the captains was chosen to go to some volunteer recruitment/retainment classes. Along with that, lots of table discussions on how to solve the situation. With their hopes of getting hired somewhere and being next to Kansas City does help. Our success rate is around 90% of our resident vollys getting hired either by us or other depts. We do have volunteers that will always be vollys since a lot of the time their salaries are better than ours lol. There are requirements that all must meet both paid and volunteers. We also now have set up a "retirement" that after 20yrs of service there will be monies paid out. Won't be huge but it will be better than a sharp stick in the eye;) Johnny

| Posted about 1 month ago I am a member and former board officer of the department I am currently with. We have seen our roster go up and down as well. At one time we had 15 members and only 5 of us (including myself) showed up to train, and meeting nights were not much better. Now our roster is 35 strong. Does it meen they all show up? HELL TO THE NO! But we have always tryed to keep our meetings at the same time and day every month ( no excuse you can't get off work.... same bat time, same bat channel). I know you can't cut your dead weight when you don't have anyone to work with, but if you can set a day of the week and time, it may help. Good Luck.

| Posted about 1 month ago We have the same problem, too. We can get people to show up but when they do they have to talk about deer hunting instead of training. I hope our new cheif will solve this problem.
Good luck and stay safe. "BUCKLE UP!!!" JOHN 15:12-13 Rodney Spires

| Posted 21 days ago I know at our p.o.c. Department we are required to attend 1 training a month, 2 live burns a year. And also we were required to attend 20percent of calls per quarter. If you fail any of them without an honorable reason we were wrote up. 3 write ups along with time off on the second and third write up and then seperation after that. |
