This is what I wrote for our County. It is part of our Ceremonial Procedures. Hope it helps.

The Last Alarm:

There are many options for the Last Alarm.

County has a script for announcing the passing of a member. The Chief may request just the department involved to be notified or have it announced County Wide.

“On behalf of Chief (name) and the members of (name) Fire Department, it is with deep regret and sorrow that we announce that (rank & name) has answered his/her Finial Alarm (date) (may at LODD).” “Arrangements are to be …………”

(This should be repeated)

The Chief may wish to have a “Last Alarm Toned Out” This may be done as the procession stops at the Firehouse viewing the “Gear” or at graveside just prior to the Sounding of the Bell..

Request County Fire to tone out the Department. The following is only a suggestion:

After tones – “Anywhere Fire Department on the air with a special alarm and announcement. It is with deep regret and sorrow we must announce that Ex-Chief John Smith has answered his last alarm on this dateat 1300 hours and has returned home safely where he/she awaits their next assignment. The Chief and department members thanks you for your service to our community and will never forget your Honor, Courage and Duty.

Anywhere F.D. clear.”

Sounding of the Bell

The bell also signifies the “Last Alarm”. It may be done alone or with the Tone Out.

The Chief or his designee will need to explain to the attendees the tradition of the Sounding of the Bell.

All Uniformed personnel should be standing at attention:

“Since the beginning, in the Fire Service the bell started the day, Rang through out the day’s work and at the completion of each every alarm, the fire department signals that they have returned to the station and are ready for duty. The next Alarm.

In times past, the bell was used as the signal. We signal today with (Chiefs’ choice*) that our member (name) (has lost his/her life in the Line of Duty

and ) has returned home safely and awaits his/her next assignment. Gods Speed”

(Members present arms !)

Chief’s choice*: 5-5-5-5 FDNY   3-3-3-3 Chicago

Madison County 10-98 = 10-9-8

(Members order arms!)

Bugle or Bagpipe solo

Huntington Manor F.D. lost their Chaplain in the line this week.

His funeral was yesterday. The story, photos and a great video are here at this link.

It will give an idea how we should honor those who have given everything.

Locally we perform the last alarm with the bell at the service.  Dispatch will perform a last call out over all frequencies (multi agency county dispatch) like they were paging the fallen firefighter.   Firefighter _____ , Dispatch..... Firefighter ______, Dispatch..... Firefighter ____ no contact. Firefighter ____ has answered the Last Alarm, he is gone but not forgotten.

Always forget how much this hits me even though been a few months since heard it last

My father was a vol. FF when he passed.  I'll never forget standing graveside, hearing, "Fire dispatch to 19B.......................Fire dispatch to 19B............Fire dispatch to 19B. (Tones) This is the last call for Randy Cline, this is the last call for Randy Cline @..............."  That and the pipes doing Amazing Grace.  I will never forget.

There is nothing more sad to hear than a last call with the pipes playing amazing grace afterward...I am truely sorry for the loss of your brother/sister firefighter....I know it hurts.
