For some firefighters firefighting is a love. For others it is a duty, to either themselves, their families, or both.  What is Firefighting to you?

For me it started as a love then became a sense of duty.   I feel I have a duty to my fellow man to help them in time of emergency need to an extent and this is one way I enjoy doing that.

Its really both for me now. It started as a love for the action and thrill, but now its duty too. Like jc_murphy says, "duty to my fellow man to help them time of emergency..." and I wouldn't trade it for any thing.

Started as a sense of community duty, (volunteering,) in light of our increasingly hot and dangerous fire seasons, but discovered that I absolutely LOVE it.

For me its the love of being a fire fighter.  I got started as a volunteer police officer in FL and loved that cause i was helping people in my community.  Its that same love i had for law enforcement that got me to join my volunteer fire dept. in NC ( where i currently live). I love being able to help others and cant see what i do as a duty but pure love of helping others.

I am a volunteer who has been doing this for two years. I had several small structure fires and many training classes. We had a major country club catch fire and we were working like dogs several times through out the night I kept asking myself why am I doing this? I am not getting paid? But I volunteered to help out the department who is short handed like the others in my area. I have a full time job, run a small business, two kids and a wife and a sick mother. Do I have free time,,,,, RIGHT!!!!

DEFINATELY A "LOVE" AND IT RUNS STRONG IN MY BLOOD. WHEN I HAD TO RETIRE DUE TO A  BACK INJURY, I WENT THROUGH A LONG PERIOD OF DEPRESSION AND HAD TO COMPLETELY CUT ALL TIES WITH MY DEPT.  LIFE IS BETTER NOW, BUT NOT A DAY GOES BY THAT I DON'T THINK ABOUT MY FIREFIGHTER CAREER THAT WAS CUT SHORT.

The answer is clear to me... love fights fire. love rescues the injured. love makes you share your chance at life to help others cheat death. FIREFIGHTING IS PURE LOVE, BABY!!!

really we need an option C both... I love being with most of the crew at my station and love working around the clock when needed.  But those calls at night I feel like I am drivin by my sense of Duty to serve the town and to help where ever I can.

Fire Fighting was actually one of my greatest fears starting out. I had way too much  tradgedy in my life concerning fire. 5 years into my fire career I have grown to love it. Its like conquering the past and facing my fears evey time I get to face the dragon and I do love ! For me there is nothing job about it!!
