| Description: | A history of east coast FDs, esp. FDNY, from the 1600s. Out of print, 1930. Ignore 1999 reprint below, I was wrong on that, although his other stuff is back, so perhaps they'll get to this one. Originals are VERY fragile, so if you get it via interlibrary loan, be extremely careful. Write to Basic Books to ask for a reprint at: perseus.promos@perseusbooks.com |

Written by Herbert Asbury (Gangs of New York, the Barbary Coast, the French Quarter) in 1930, this covers the history of firefighting in NYC since the Dutch. A chapter covers George Washington's lifelong direct involvement as a FF, and is interesting in that they were ALL volunteers until 1865. Economics and politics are fascinating topics. The book was reprinted in 1999, and it's a great bit of perspective.

Looks like an interesting read. Anything about the history of the fire service is worth the time.
