I know that these are hell on four legs, they get mean when they get old, but if this a fire department related site, it needs a department related dog. I put a German Shepherd on PoliceLink.

They are hyper and get mean when they get old. After they calm down they are okay.

I've had two a male and female. My boy Ben (Gentle Ben) lived to 15 and was the most loving, mellow and good natured dog. My girl Sammi who is 7 is the same way. They are all a challenge as puppies but it is all how you raise them.

Don't like them. They are a handsome breed and very traditional but usually either deaf or dumb as hell. Or both.

Find a good breeder, take time to train, & you'll have a great pet. They are energetic, but lovable. You'll be seeing 'spots'.

I got a dalmation for my kids years ago. I was unprepared for their need of attention and being high strung. He chewed up anything and everything in my house made of leather and was more than I could handle being a single mom with 4 kids 8 and under so we had to give him away. Very loving dog, but very much work too and had seperation anxiety any time we all left the house or even went to bed at night. I didn't believe in kenneling animals then but now know the value of.

Best dog i have ever owned! Mine is almost 15 and he is good tempered and well behaved, listens to me and my kids. When he was a puppy he needed all the attention we could give him, and he was hyper, but today he is great!

I have one and I love him to death. When trained properly- and this is KEY- you have to be prepared to basically do everything you would for a child. Once you have committed that time and responsibility to the animal, they are PHENOMENAL friends and are incredibly smart. Mine is quiet, well trained, NEVER chews anything in the house or makes a mess, and best of all is completely and totally loyal.

Good breeding is a must for the best animal. The "101 Dalmaition" movies caused such a high demand for them that many didn't do the proper breeding & the bad ones are the result. I have had 2, the first was a puppy that was from a decent breeder the second was a rescue adoption & while i loved them both, circumstances caused our departure. They are VERY energetic dogs (hence the breed was made for running along side the fire wagons), very territorial (bred to guard horses, equipment & the stations) & can get mean over the years (usually due brain issues, also causing epilepsey) but they are great family dogs, they love to have peoplearound & be apart of the action (again good for the old fire house way of life). They shed like crazy, so hope you like lil white hairs on everything, but daily grooming can cut down on that. I miss my Symphony & Franklin... i loved those dogs. Make sure you have lots of room for them inside the home (they aren't good with the outdoor living-I've been told) & play with them every chance you get; morning runs, kids outside, riding horses across the pasture, sling shotting tennis balls for a 100 yard game of fetch. They will be a great family pet as long as they are bred properly, trained properly & taught that everybody in the family is their master, not just the Alpha male or female.

They are a great breed and very loyal. They do need a lot of attention, but all breeds do. I have a young female and she is great with the kid and the family and she loves it at the station with my second family there. They are very smart animals. Alot of people don't think so because if you don't spend the time to train them they come off that way. They will only do what you let them do and 98% of the time they only want to make you happy. They do tend to go blind when they get older not mean. They can not see if you treat them like a blind person you never have any problems. Mine is trained as a service dog and she goes everywhere with me from playing in the yard with the kids to sitting on the truck as i go fight fire and cut up cars. she does fire prevention at the schools with me and the kids react better to her than us. I've had three of them and they all died of old age. This one is number four and my little girl want us to get another that can stay at home with her. Over all they are great dogs if you take the time to train them if you don't want to do that you will have all the problems you hear about, but don't you have that with any animal.

I have a Dalmation. 10 years old and as lovable as any. Never had a mean streak, good natured and most of all, he was easy to train. Maybe because he is not a pure breed. He will heel when not on a leash as well as sit on the "Tailboard" and watch the world go by without wondering away. The only drawback I can see is he insists on sitting in the Officers seat. (LOL) His name is Smokey. Named after one of his favorite perks. He will follow any Firefighter as well as my Dad if they are smoking. He is also known to "Huff" out candles just to sniff the smoke. He is my friend, my pal and my buds.
