Kinnda a little much to pay for, but does the job that's needed, and stores away nicely.

There are similar products that work just as well. RescueDisk is about $35 including shipping and has the same reach and ease of use. I haven't used this product personally, but I have used the RescueDisk and I can't imagine anything being much easier. I'd find it hard to justify the price tag on the Life-Safer.

I am always amazed that people can make judgements on products that they have not even used. The price reflects the 3 years of research and development to create a tool that is safe and effective and another 3 years of effort to get it USCG approved. If you strike a person with the hard plastic ResQDisc you will cause a serious injury. The Retriever's EPE foam construction eliminates this liability. The attachment of the line to the top of the Retriever allows it to station keep even in fast flowing water, the ResQDisc will submerge and possibly snag rendering it useless. The Retriever is made in the USA keeping Americans employed.
