The new 5th edition is in and it is one of the finest most comprehensive training guides I have ever seen! I love the Essentials, but this one is Fantastic! I received a desk copy and after I went through the new Essentials I sat down and wrote a new syllabus immediately to include this resource in my Firefighter I / II Instruction. It is amazing! Since the 1st edition of the Essentials of Fire Fighting was published, more than 2 million firefighters have been trained by this manual. Brady has joined forces with IFSTA to publish an expanded version that includes fire department operations such as first aid and hazardous materials. The 5th edition of Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations is correlated to the 2008 edition of NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, Levels I and II, and is widely accepted as the standard of knowledge and skills measurement for all firefighters. We have been using this series for the last 12 years in our training center. We have a 98% passing average on the state tests.

The State of NC uses this book for its Fire Cert. Program and I use it to teach out of, One of the best things is for Instructors to get the Power point program to go along with the book. I use it more than i use the States power point program and the students can see what your telling them them better in the illistrations. Great product

This book is soooo much better than the previous 4 editions, much more comprehensive & of course very up to date with information (much more than the 4th) as well as the formatting of the book and pictures - definately speaks to the younger firefighters...I have already been teaching from this book, I do NOT like the instructors power point - the notes read right off the power point, thank goodness we have the ability to modify the presentation.

It's a long way from the red books we started with. I have seen a lot of changes come and go. IFSTA has worked to keep a good product on the shelf for years. Some new fancy books have come along in recent time and visually put the Essentials manuals of the past to shame. I must say however this was a great catch up and in my opinion surpassing of the competition.

A great tool to train your firefighters in the basic skills they need to serve the public. All of our Cadet classes go thru Essential training and get certified as FFI and II's. We are moving to the 5th edition n 2009 and will use it on our next academy class scheduled for Aug of this year.

I am currently using this book @ the Fire Science Academy; this book is filled with information that can take a green horn and give them the book knowledge that is needed. It is displayed in an easy and understandable format. It also comes with a cd that has test, live footage of back draft, flash over, etc. This book is filled with valuable information that I will look back on throughout my career.

Much more detail in this edition. It does mean the student will have to study more but that is a good thing. Up-dated and current with most of todays practices and theories.
