5-Month-Old Overdoses on Heroin; Parents Charged

SPRINGFIELD, Va. – A Fairfax County couple faces felony child abuse and neglect charges after their baby nearly died from eating heroin.

But police tell The Washington Post they think the baby picked up a packet of the drug and put it in his mouth while his parents were shooting up with friends last July. The friends were considered “long-term guests” who took care of the baby. Records indicate the parents used heroin to pay the friends for babysitting.
The mother, 36-year-old Marilyn Fischl, and father Rafael Preston, 36, took their baby to the emergency room at Inova Fairfax Hospital on July 14. The suspicious staff contacted Child Protective Services, and the baby was taken away.
But Fischl and Preston were not arrested until last Thursday following a search of their Springfield home in the Newington Forest neighborhood. A Fairfax County Police spokesman said there was no rush because the baby boy and Fischl’s other children had already been removed.
Both mother and father have a history of arrests and convictions for robbery, prostitution, drug and firearms violations. The baby and Fischl’s other children are in protective custody.

The parents and their so called long term guests should never be allowed to be around children again. If the parents want to mess up their life, thats one thing but leave the kids out of it. Castrate these people so they cant have anymore kids. People like this make me sick. The parents need a good old fashioned azz whooping.

I do see the other side to waiting so long to prosecute. Perhaps the D.A. and the local police have been operating a sting in order to find out who the supplier is? Take down the dealer and save someone else's kid!

These people do not qualify to be called "parents". That is absolutely horrible. I hope they child is ok and that the "parents" get what they deserve for this. Also I would have to agree that they should have been prosecuted when it happened. Not months later!

Nothing suprises me anymore considering that the parents of this child had prior records and were allowed to still have custody of their kids. The courts are so bent on "Creating a bond" between the parents and their children that they don't really look at what is in the best interest of the children in cases like this. It's as if they turn away ignoring the facts and I have to question why Protective Custody services did nothing or how much involvement was shown over the time of the parent's arrests.

ok...this happened in July...why is it that they were just arrested? I understand that the kids were already removed, but why give the egg and sperm donors time to continue on with life as normal for them? They should have been arrested and jailed right away. This is not justice for those children.

This is absolutely horrifying! How could anyone care so little about their children to even allow this kind of activity in their neighborhood, let alone their home?! I would have snitched these people out a long time ago, and then told them I was the one who called the cops! We need to stand up and take our streets back! Too many people are "scared" to do the right thing!
