NEW HAVEN — A massive rebar cage toppled onto a worker Friday during construction on a new Route 34 highway flyover, but the man escaped without a life threatening injury, authorities said. Firefighters from both of the Fire Department’s specialty squads responded for the precarious extrication. The victim was pinned between the rebar cage and a slightly elevated wooden platform. When firefighters arrived, construction workers had used a crane to slightly lift the metal cage, which was to be used as reinforcement for a highway support at Canal Dock Road, to relieve some of the pressure on the victim’s leg and back, said Assistant Fire Chief Ralph Black. Firefighters used wooden chocks to shore up the cage before crawling into the void under the platform, said Capt. Jay Schwartz. They used saws to cut the wood from below to free the man.
