Firefighter Killed Searching Burning House

YONKERS — A firefighter searching for victims at a house fire here was killed early Friday, the authorities said.
The firefighter, Patrick Joyce, died about 2 a.m., Mayor Philip A. Amicone said.
Witnesses had told firefighters that there were people on the top floor, and Mr. Amicone said that Firefighter Joyce and another firefighter were searching when the intense heat and smoke either knocked them out a third-floor window or they jumped.

Two firefighters who responded to the blaze were listed in serious but stable condition Friday afternoon: Lt. Joseph Murray and Firefighter William Kanych.
Mr. Amicone said that Firefighter Joyce, 39, a 16-year veteran, left behind a wife and two young daughters.
Mr. Amicone said that the fire appeared to have started in more than one place and that it had been deemed suspicious.
