New Reality TV Series Follows Lives of First Responders
L.A.'s bravest battle a blaze in Compton, Calif. [New York Daily News]

COMPTON, CA – A lot of reality shows featuring singers, actors and rappers are for those with a career on the way out, said actor-singer Tyrese Gibson.
Not him.
So, rather than go that route, Gibson is getting into reality as a producer and narrator of “First In,” a 10-episode series launching Wednesday at 10 on BET that follows firefighters and paramedics in Compton, Calif.
“At some point, I’m going to be on camera, but it’s going to be a very organic thing,” he told the Daily News. “I might show up and surprise kids at an event with the firefighters, but it’s going to be organic, not me riding the firetruck.”
And that’s the point, he said, of the entire show – the firefighters riding the trucks and ambulances around the clock, day after day, in a neighborhood known for being one of the toughest spots on the planet.“I’m not a firefighter,” he said, “I don’t put myself on the line everyday. I didn’t want to make the show about me.”
Instead, the show follows a format pioneered two decades ago by “Cops,” where cameras tail the firefighters as they respond to calls ranging from gunshots, to car crashes, to fires.
“We definitely capture some drama,” Gibson said. “There’s going to be some rough television for viewers.”
However, he’s also quick to note that there’s a reason behind the show beyond showing blood and guts, or burned-up buildings. He wants to focus attention on a group of folks doing good work in Compton.
“This is a way of shedding light on a lot of serious issues going on in the community,” said Gibson, who grew up in nearby Watts. “And then we can have the politicians, the Arnold Schwarzeneggers in the world, pay attention and give some dollars and funding.”
Part of the goal, he said, was to put a face on the people doing the work, too, and what they go through. Among them is Marcel Melanson, one of the youngest battalion chiefs in the nation, who tries to balance work with his family.
Camera crews spent six or seven weeks following the firefighters. If the show clicks, Gibson and his team have plans to take it to firefighters in Baltimore or New York.
“It was amazing how human they were, as weird as that may sound,” Gibson said of those profiled. “In the midst of the things they’re exposed to, that dramatic, they were just regular guys.”

I agree with you weaver1436, I wish they had double the episodes and ran an hour long, but thats the t.v. industry for you the only take calculated "risk" on new shows.

Show is great, not only did I TiVo it (for date nights, *wink*), but I caught the first episode online/onduty; I was able to watch it between calls. Hate that its only 30 minutes, but I think it will do very well. Thanks Tyrese!!

Found out about this show last week and have been checking it out. Well done and finaly a "real life" show about firefighters. We need to really support this show and email the network about our support for the show. If ratings are high for it maybe it'll get the attention of the other networks!

You were not born yet BamaBoi, but it was call "Emergency!" Squad 51, there is a Group on here that covers the interest of that famed, 1975-1978 NBC/Universal Show, which 30yrs later, "Trauma", which has actual FIRE/EMS off duty in the Background. Go to You Tube or old school cable channel and watch it. Not reality, but a start for many, many in the current and past Pub Safety folks.

ok there are about 15 police or LE type shows, about 5 medical type shows with most being OR level instead of ER/Trama level, one over dramatic FR show and finally a reality show that set to follow the people everyone likes. if i remember right ER was one of the longest running shows but no one has tried to cash in on the excitment of fire rescue until now.

Figures, out of all the channels I get, this isn't one of them. Plus, why don't they show this on the Discovery Channel instead of BET?

Just watched the first two episodes on BET.com.I gotta say,I liked it alot. The producer, Tyrese Gibson from the fast and the furious famementioned they would move to other cities in the future. I was glad that they started in compton just to show that there is something good coming from there.

The show sounds great and maybe firefighters will FINALLY get the recognition for the hard work they do on a daily basis. Move over law enforcement to the donut shops, fire rescue has this one covered......:0)
