ST. PETERSBURG – A St. Petersburg fire truck heading to a call of a bleeding man apparently ran over the man.
According to St. Petersburg Fire Rescue, the department received a call about 3:45 p.m. today about a "person bleeding’’ in the 400 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street South. That location is about a block from the fire station.
A fire truck headed out of the station’s garage bay and immediately hit a man lying on the driveway, the fire department reported. The man appears to be the same person referenced in the earlier call, according to St. Petersburg Fire Rescue.Fire officials said the injured man was Ted Lenox, a 41-year-old homeless man who tends to frequent downtown St. Petersburg. Lenox had laid down in front of one of the station’s garage bay doors, and someone called 911 to report him.
When the fire station received the call, the firefighters got in the truck and hit Lenox on the way out of the garage bay. The truck’s undercarriage caught Lenox and tumbled him forward; the truck stopped when firefighters felt a bump as the rear wheels ran over him.
Lenox was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with what are described as life-threatening injuries.

Thats not the smartest spot in the world to lay down but fire personel should be a little more careful when leaving their buildings and going to calls...you never know when something could be there. Unfortunantly crap like this happens and I feel bad for every1 involved :-(

You may not see him there - at the oldest station in my town the trucks are mere inches from the bay doors, and you can't see directly in front of the truck / right outside the door. Still, I always open the door and then to my walk around, just in case there is something outside the doors I'll see it when I come back to the front of the truck.

Could this be a case of suiside? I know it may not be a popular opinion but anything is possible? With the economy ,homelessness, did this person have a past history of mental illness?? This sucks, I hope he is O.k.and the Crew is O.K., I can't imagine how the engineer and Officer felt when this happen. I hope all turns out well.

You would think, as the bay opens, you would maybe see the man there. Perhaps someone that was about to hop on the truck would notice? How could NO ONE see a man just laying there...?

i imagine he was trying to get to the station for help and jsut passed out in front of the door from blood loss. the caller should have reported that the guy was mobile and left the scene but this stuff happens fortunetly not often.

Like they tell us in class- Be aware of your surroundings from the end of the call to the beginning! I bet there were some unhappy officials. I hope the man is alright and the fire personnel will be mentally alright!

It is a shame....One can get very accustom to leaving their driveways/garages and not expecting anything to be directly in front of it, just makes you wonder what they [caller] might have told dispatch when asked for the location of the individual...feel sorry for all involved, only could think if information was pass that the individual was "in front of the bay doors/roll-up doors" if it would have happened. The other thing that surprises me...who gave this accident/mishap a thumb up!
