PORT ARTHUR, TX – An off-duty Port Arthur firefighter died over the Fourth of July weekend when he fell from a balcony of a house in Crystal Beach.

Steven McShan, 24, of Lumberton, was climbing to a third-floor balcony from the second floor of the house when he fell about 40 feet onto a concrete driveway about 8:45 p.m. Saturday, said Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Department.

McShan was trying to reach children who were playing on the third-floor balcony.

LifeFlight took the firefighter to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where he died upon arrival.

McShan had rented the Bolivar Peninsula home in the 2300 block of Antigua Drive with friends for the holiday weekend, Tuttoilmondo said.
