Firefighters Continue Battling Volusia Brush Fire

The Orlando Sentinel

May 27, 2011

Volusia County firefighters this morning are continuing to battle the 125-acre brush fire that threatened homes Wednesday near DeLand.

Pat Kuehn, spokeswoman for Volusia County Fire Services, said firefighters will be putting out flares and hot spots today.

Winds are predicted to pick up today and they could affect the fire located in the Daytona Park Estates subdivision, on Larkspur Road, east of DeLand.

Kuehn said the blaze is 50 percent contained. It is not threatening homes in that subdivision.

It took about sixty firefighters Wednesday to keep the blaze from damaging 24 homes and 12 outbuildings, such as sheds or garages, in the subdivision.

That blaze is the largest of several that firefighters dealt with throughout the day in Volusia County, as dry conditions increase the brush-fire risk.
