Whether or not it’s back by popular demand, the 2012 New York City Fire Department calendar was unveiled yesterday after three years out of print.

Officials from the department made famous by its heroic response to the 9/11 attacks previewed the risqué calendar April 21 on Good Morning America.

According to the FDNY website, this is the first official calendar released by the department since 2008. Each month, the calendar discusses a different topic for fire safety and features a large photo of a topless New York City firefighter.

According to the New York Times, the department stopped printing a calendar after 2008 when one of its featured firefighters was found to have posed nude in a “Guys Gone Wild” video.

It’s unclear why the high-profile department decided to release a new calendar for 2012. Reports indicate that it’s purely a fundraising initiative. Part of the calendar sale proceeds will go to non-profit FDNY Foundation, where the calendar is sold exclusively.
