AL Mayor Withdraws Plan To Build New Firefighter Museum

PELHAM, Ala. — The mayor of Pelham is backing away from plans to melt the city’s main ice skating rink and replace it with a firefighter museum.
Pelham Mayor Don Murphy says he received hundreds of calls and emails from residents who were angry about his plan to remove one of two ice rinks at the Pelham Civic Complex.
The rink is popular with figure skaters and hockey teams including one from the University of Alabama.
So Murphy told a meeting on Monday that he won’t move ahead with a proposal to remove the rink and replace it with a firefighter museum.
nstead, he hopes to appoint a committee and take suggestions for ways to erase what he describes as a nearly $1 million-a-year deficit for the complex.
