DULLES, Va. – A search and rescue team from Fairfax County returned home from Japan early Sunday morning. Virginia Task Force 1 spent the last week searching for survivors around the seaport city of Ofunato, without success.

Spokeswoman Renee Stilwell says a team from Los Angeles was also pulled out because the weather conditions in northern Japan make it unlikely there will be any more survivors in the rubble. There were 74 people combined in the American contingent.

“They left over $145,000 worth of supplies for the Japanese and that included zodiac boats, and beds, cots and food.”

The team was part of a task force set up by the United States Agency for International Development, which also pays for the mission.
