Rescuer Falls Through Ice Trying to Reach Dog

ORLAND, Ind. — Crews had to pull a firefighter to safety after he fell through the ice while trying to reach a dog from a northeastern Indiana lake.

Orland firefighters were called Sunday by the owners of the dog after it walked onto the half-inch ice of Lake Pleasant and fell in. Firefighter Mike Garrison inched out while wearing full rescue gear but the ice gave way with temperatures in the 20s.

The Herald Republican reports Garrison was able to grab the dog and those on shore pulled both to safety.

Orland deputy fire chief Kim Norton says the rescue was great practice for the department. Norton says while some people might think the rescue effort was too much for a dog, the crews realize the dog is important for its family.
