Two firefighters received minor injuries early this morning while battling a two-alarm blaze in Kansas City, Kan.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Monday night, fire crews were called to a house fire at South Minnie Street, near Southwest Boulevard, according to fire officials.

The firefighters were injured when the structure around them began to collapse. The walls of the residence fell outward. One firefighter broke his foot and the second firefighter sustained neck and back pain. Both were treated at a hospital.

Fire crews remain at the scene dousing smoldering embers. The house was a total loss. At least two adjacent residences were damaged.

The homeowner’s truck was parked in front of the residence, but crews were unable to locate the homeowner.

Elsewhere, fire crews extinguished a residential fire around 1 a.m. in the 2700 block of South Eighth Terrace.

The occupants inside the residence escaped without injury. The cause of the blaze has not been determined but initial investigation indicated that an overloaded electrical outlet may have ignited the fire.

Fire officials said the blaze caused about $35,000 damage to the structure and the contents.
