Off-Duty FF's Gear Swiped While Helping With Rescue

Associated Press

October 05, 2010

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Officials in Michigan are seeking the return of hockey equipment taken while an off-duty firefighter was helping a woman trapped in a burning car.

Ann Arbor battalion chief Robert Vogel says Monday that the bag of gear either was taken from the bed of John Maguire’s truck or plucked from the ground nearby where it had fallen Sept. 25 in Washtenaw County’s Lima Township, about 47 miles west of Detroit.

Maguire helped pull 57-year-old Michelle Stoj from the car, but she later died.

When he returned to his truck the hockey equipment was gone. It was valued at about $500.
