Fire Department Deputy Chief Dies Unexpectedly

HINSDALE- Hinsdale Fire Department Deputy Chief Mark Johnson, 55, died unexpectedly Monday while exercising in the station’s fitness room.
Johnson, a 24-year veteran of the department, was found unresponsive in the station’s workout room Monday afternoon while on duty. Firefighters attempted to revive him on the scene, but Johnson was pronounced dead after arriving at Hinsdale Hospital shortly after, according to Chief Mike Kelly.
“He was fantastic,” Kelly said. “He was just a real personal guy and had been a fixture in Hinsdale for 30 years.”
Johnson started at the department in 1986 and made his was up the chain of command over the years. He was promoted to deputy chief in May of 2008, Kelly said.
Johnson lived in LaGrange Park and is survived by his wife Cheryl and his son Matt.
A wake will be held on Thursday, Sept. 23 from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Gibbons Elliston Funeral Home in Hinsdale and a fire department walk through is scheduled for Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
