ANTIOCH, IL – An Antioch firefighter died early Saturday when a pickup truck he was driving crashed into a utility pole in far north Lake County, authorities said.

Eric Norden, 30, of Wilmot, Wis., died from multiple trauma, said Lake County Coroner Richard Keller. He said Norden was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:45 a.m.

Keller said Norden was driving alone in the pickup on West Wilmot Road near the Wisconsin state line when he struck a pole around 4 a.m. West Wilmot Road is north of Route 173.

Antioch Fire Department Chief John Nixon said Norden was a paid-on-call firefighter there since 2003. He said Norden worked full time with Town of Salem Fire and Rescue in Wisconsin.

“My contact with Eric has been one of him being a dedicated young man who devoted himself to firefighting as a passion,” said Nixon, who took over as the Antioch district’s chief in May.

Nixon said flags were at half-staff Saturday at the department’s stations and that Antioch will coordinate with Salem on arrangements for Norden. He said black-and-purple bunting will be up at the main firehouse in downtown Antioch.
