NEWARK — A Newark firefighter suffered serious injuries after he fell from a city fire truck while responding to an incident Monday night, authorities said.
The firefighter was sitting in the “bucket seat” and tumbled into the street when the vehicle made a left turn onto Osborne Terrace just before 10 p.m. Monday, according to Newark Fire Chief Michael Lalor.
The victim was taken to University Hosptial, where he was treated for lacerations to his head and face, Lalor said. The firefighter, who was not identified, will have to wear a neck brace for the next two weeks since he may have suffered vertebrae damage during the fall.
He was released from University Hospital today.
Lalor said a civilian witness ran into the street to shield the firefighter from oncoming traffic until firefighters and emergency rescue crews arrived at the scene to treat him. The truck was responding to a report of a fire at 319 Hawthorne Ave., which Lalor said turned out to be a minor incident.
