NY Teen Arrested In Death of EMT
July 14, 2010
NEW YORK CITY (AP) – A teenager identified through photos taken of him at a house party over the July 4 weekend was arrested Tuesday in the stabbing death of an emergency medical technician on the street outside, police said.
Alexander Hernandez, 19, was arrested on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
Someone who took photos at the party heard a description of the stabbing suspect, saw a person in the photos who matched that description and went by the name Alex and then alerted police, Detective William Winning said.
Hernandez was in custody early Wednesday and couldn’t be reached for comment. A woman who answered the phone at a Brooklyn home number listed for him said he didn’t live there.
Police responding to a call on July 3 found 20-year-old Kelvin Buggs on the street just after 3 a.m. Buggs had been slashed in the neck and shoulder. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Buggs, who was off duty when he was killed, had joined the ranks of the city’s EMTs last fall. He worked a second job to support his girlfriend and 2-year-old daughter, relatives said.
