Fayetteville, N.C. — A woman who had been in the hospital for three days returned to her Apache Drive home this morning only to discover it had been destroyed by fire.
A neighbor in the Fairlane Acres Mobile Home Park notified firefighters about 6 a.m. that heavy smoke was coming from the trailer, said Hieu Sifford, a battalion commander with the Fayetteville Fire Department.
The woman, who was not identified, arrived while firefighters were on the scene, Sifford said. She told them she had been in the hospital for three days. The fire started in a back bedroom, Sifford said.
The cause has not been determined, and city police are investigating, Sifford said, but he doesn’t think the fire is suspicious.
An air conditioner was left on while the woman was gone, Sifford said.
“It’s just that no one was home when it started,” he said.
Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours, Sifford said.
The woman is staying with her parents, Sifford said.
