As the first contestant, Corlew had to accept the prizes — behind the curtain, in boxes or in envelopes — that other contestants turned down.
The leftovers he got were winners every time — a $3,389 entertainment center, which he bartered for an $8,400 Jet Ski.
When the final round came, the woman who won the most valuable prize up to that point in the show, a Nissan Versa, didn’t want to risk losing it for a chance at the big prize.
Corlew went for it because he was willing to let go of the Jet Ski.
Corlew, without hesitation, picked Door No. 1, which opened to reveal the Mustang. The hardest part about winning, he said, was keeping it secret until the show was broadcast.
His silence amazed his partners in the fire department.
“Wylie and him kept it quiet until the day of the show. Unbelievable,” said firefighter Donald Archambault.
