Clay Center Fire Chief Jonathan Siemers, 44, died this weekend in the line of duty.

It was stated that Siemers was on call for the 24 hours preceding his death answering an alarm call at McKinley Apartments.

Assistant fire chief Dallas Cunningham has been appointed interim fire chief as of this morning.

Siemers began his career as a firefighter in June 1997. He was promoted to fire chief on January 1, 2003.

Siemers was known as a vital instrument in obtaining several significant grants from FEMA and Homeland Security that were later used to purchase equipment and emergency preparedness. These grants allowed the city to purchase generators and update sirens.

He was a Clay County representative on the Regional Emergency Planning Council and served on the Legislative Committee of a Kansas State Fireman’s Association. He was also a Sergeant First Class in the Kansas National Guard
