ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — A veteran Rockford firefighter accused of stealing more than $15,000 from the department by falsifying time sheets has resigned.

Rockford fire lieutenant Brian Watkins stepped down Saturday during a hearing to decide whether he would keep his job. He’d been with the department for nearly 20 years.

Watkins told supporters at the Rockford Board of Fire and Police Commissioners meeting that he’s not a bad person.

In exchange for his resignation, Watkins leaves the department in good standing and forfeits his accumulated sick time.

Watkins has pleaded not guilty to charges that he used a department computer to forge documents and commit theft.

He’s accused of getting overtime pay for work he didn’t do. His criminal case is still pending.
