The bigger Ladder Trucks are so long that they require an additional driver on the rear to steer the rear axles.

In 2006 and 2007 I spent a few week each summer in NYC at Columbia University working on my Masters in History. On the 3rd night there I met some FDNY Firefighters from Ladder 35 and Engine at 125 street and Amsterdam in Harlem. They invited me to their Firehouse for dinner. We all became great friends and I was able to train and ride with them. It was a Wild Wild Time! I had never before rode on a Ladder Truck that required a tiller driver! It was Extraordinary weaving through Manhattan Traffic!!I agree the camaraderie in the Fire Service is excellent and reminds me of the time I spent in college playing on the football team. Take Care!
