Volunteers work to remove items from adjacent businesses in a Hamilton fire Tuesday (WGEM News)HAMILTON, Ill. (WGEM) -- An infant has been confirmed dead as an apartment fire claimed multiple businesses in the 900 block Broadway.
Hamilton Mayor Steve Woodruff confirms to WGEM News that an infant has died in the fire. Nearly 20 people were rescued as the fire from apartments in the area as the fire began.
"We tried going into the building that was on fire, and there was people screaming at the front of it. We were able to get the ladder and the firemen came around and we were able to get the couple down the front of the building," said Woodruff.
Fire crews were called to the building on Broadway Street around 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, where the fire began in apartments above Wayne's Appliance and an adjacent empty storefront.
Nearby businesses evacuated and owners rushed to get their valuables out. Those stores include Wayne's Appliance, Lacy's Beauty Salon and Woodie's Clipper Shop. One of those buildings was being bulldozed Tuesday night.
Woodruff says over a dozen residents have been displaced by the fire.
Crews from Hamilton, Warsaw, Carthage and Keokuk are all on the scene.
Broadway remains shut down to traffic at this time.
