About Me
I love jokes, and do like to tease sometimes. I can be mischievous but only very rarely. Sometimes I’m funny. I’m deaf and do speak English. I can talk and read lips. I love to communicate with anyone. I also know sign language (ASL- American Sign Language). I was a chairperson for Silent Supper group meetings bringing the deaf and hearing people together to communicate. I love to teach and help others in overcoming the challenges of communication. Silent Suppers are always "No voice permitted." No voice, just mime, and signing hands to each other. Voice is only permitted when you laugh. Signing suppers have become a staple of deaf community social life. What is a signing supper, also known as a "silent supper" or "ASL dinner?" It is a social event where a group of people meets for dinner at a local restaurant. The group may consist of both deaf people and hearing people (or only deaf people) who want to practice their sign language, make new friends, or just plain socialize. Sign language students and parents of deaf children especially enjoy going to signing suppers as it gives them a chance to practice their skills in a relaxed environment and to interact with members of the deaf community. Do you know what to do when talking to a deaf or hard of hearing person? Many hearing people feel awkward or frustrated trying to communicate with deaf/hoh people, especially when no interpreter is available. There are improvements you can make to reduce the awkwardness and frustration. If you are a male, be aware that your facial hair can have a dramatic influence on your communication with the deaf person. Some people can lipread a person with a mustache and beard, other simply find it impossible. Don't take it personally, and don't give up but try other ways to communicate. To get their attention, you can either wave your hand, tap their shoulders gently, flicker the lights, or stomp on the floor if it is wooden and carries vibrations Thank you,
