I think when i took mine part of it was in a pool, then the rest of it was at either lake Jocasse or Keowee both are in SC

Well the first class you would take is Open water. You have to take them in sequence, it lasts prob a couple of weeks, but you dont have class everyday. Its mostly weekends, then if you want to be able to go deeper you can take the Advanced class and you can go up to like 100' or so. I am taking my rescue diver now, its after advanced. Also with the Advanced class you do a night dive, so there on out you can dive at night.

Do you have any classes so far? My cousin is actually an instructor... its free if your fd will pay for it i know mine did, but if not they usually run anywhere from 150 to 200 i guess it depends on which classes you take. Its a lot of fun though, the books are what costs so much. When you get back get in touch with me if you are interested. I dont know how far New Bern is from Hendersonville, but if its not far i can get you hooked up.
