- About Me
- My name is Chris and Im currently a Solar Technician. Ive always wanted to be a firefighter since I was a kid but, EMT/Fire Science classes were not offered at SJSU and I ended up going with my second favored subject, Solar Power. I just passed my EMT class so now on to the National Registry test! I think the experience with solar will help me in the long run due to my knowledge of the NEC code book as well as knowing how to safely shut off a home solar system when there has been a fire/ground fault. I hope to meet some cool people in the start if a brand new career. Happy firefighting guys!

Nice! Thanks Brother... I will let you know if come up with any ideas as well. Either way, I am pretty sure we are gonna have to get hired outside of the bay and then lateral over after a year of so. I hvae several friends who did that. One of them got recruited for Stockton FD and after a year and a half, he lateraled over to Santa Clara FD. It is damn near impossible to get hired in the bay with little to no experience. Oakland and San Jose are number 1 and number 3 for the highest payed departments in the country. Easily can make 6 figures...

Yeah, the reason it cost $900 is cause it is a private institution. There is no government funding like with the state schools i.e. SJCC. I wanted to take my EMT at a junior college such as SJCC or mission, but didn't want to wait until next semester, nor did I want to take a 16 week session. It is only 8 weeks at WestMed. I am also currently signed up to take the CPAT on April 26th. With both of those completed by the end of May I can start testing all over the bay as well as other departments in NorCal. I will probably continue on with the Paramedic program at WestMed once I am finished with the EMT-B. It seems so competitive to get hired on that I almost feel like Paramedic is a must to give myself any kind of chance to get hired. Not to mention, Paramedics can up to 20% hire salary than just a normal firefighter. And if I get hired before I finish Paramedic school, then I will just quit school. Well, that is my plan. Hope that does the trick for me!

Nice, I took organic chemistry at SJCC a couple years ago. How long is the course? WestMed's EMT-B course is 8 weeks, but it cost $900. What are your plans after EMT?
