The Regrettable and Untimely Loss of a Friend, a Family Member and a Brother

Zygimantas Zalys, “Z” to all of his friends and coworkers, joined the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department in June 2005. “Z” joined the department so he could become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). “Z” wanted to help people. “Z” immediately started riding an ambulance out of OWL Station 12 while he went through his EMT training. After completing EMT class, “Z” decided he also wanted to become a firefighter so he enrolled in firefighter school. “Z” quickly decided this was a career for him. After finishing firefighter school, “Z” applied to the City of Manassas Rescue Squad for employment and was hired in 2007.

Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton VFD Chief Richard Arrington, said Z’s enthusiasm was infectious to the members of the department that ran with him. “Z’s” can do attitude provided mentorship to those around him, said Chief Arrington. Assistant Chief James McAllister of OWL said “Z” was assigned to me as an EMT while he went through firefighter school. “Z’s” attitude, work ethic and abilities stood out immediately. “Z” completed his training, provided EMS services, assisted with station details and never complained once about the rigorous pace and intensity of his life. “Z” often spoke of his family. I remember “Z” calling me and saying he couldn’t get his pregnant wife to answer the phone and she had been feeling ill earlier in the day. I told “Z” we would go check on her. To her surprise, late in the evening, an ambulance, a fire engine and a chief arrived at her house to see if she was ok. This was the kind of person “Z” was and always will be to us. “Z” was a people person, he cared about everyone around him and it was apparent from the minute you met him.

A few minutes before 8am this morning, July 16, 2009, "Z" passed away at his home as a result of cancer. "Z" was surrounded with family and fire department members when he passed. “Z” will be sorely missed by all of us. “Z’s” stay with us may have been short, however, it will always be memorable because of his traits and personality. Memories of “Z” will last a lifetime and be passed on for years to come.
