About Me
Bruce W. Henry (Captain/Firefighter/Driver Operator/MRT/Financial Secretary) I started my volunteer career serving with the Stonington Borough Fire Department Steamers Company in 1977. I started as a firefighter working my way up to Steamer Engineer and finely I held the Officers position of Stewart In 2002 I purchased Sterling Park Campground and set to work on building a future. In July 2006 a good friend and member of the Sterling Fire Department Greg Brierley Firefighter/EMT talked me into joining the Station 67 Sterling Fire Department. I started back at the bottom as a firefighter and soon worked my way up and qualified as a driver operator (where I was born to be) for the department’s apparatus. ET-167 (Engine Tanker) my favorite truck, R-367 Heavy Duty Rescue, T-267 tower, and the latest addition to the department E-167 a state of the art brush truck. It is my job during a fire to insure that my brother and sister firefighters always have water. I then decided to become a first responder MRT (medical response technician). During a medical call it is my job to use my training and provide treatment. This year I made Captain My duty is to assist the chiefs with station duty and with the men I also have command in there absence. I maintain the fire house program (NFIRS) and do the reporting to the state monthly. Next year I will take over the position of 2nd Assistant Chief. I also help out around the station with maintenance of the building and apparatus. I also hold the position of financial Secretary for the department. I have held the title of firefighter of the year for the last two years and looks like the honor will be mine again this year. Because I own and work at our campground I am able to make most calls. It has been and continues to be my honor and a privilege to serve with my brothers and sisters of the Sterling Fire Department Station 67. I have nothing but respect for my fellow officers and firefighters and as a member of the department feel very comfortable knowing that they would never ask us to do anything that they would not do. I would follow them almost any ware. It is a great feeling to know you have two families (Station 67 is my second home). The one you have at home and the one you have at the station. It is a great feeling knowing that if you need a hand at the station or at home all you have to do is ask we count on and rely on each other. It may not mean much to some but to me it is a big deal and an honor to make firefighter of the year for 2007 & 2008. I am looking forward to 2009. My most memorable moment to date is when then resident trooper Patrick Dragon Firefighter/EMT Greg Brierley and I responded to a call in which a 3 week old infant was unresponsive. We used or training treated the infant and handed off care to the ambulance crew. It was a great feeling to use your training and see the infant responding to you treatment. Most of our yearly calls are medical and being a MRT (Medicinal Response Technician) and because I am in town almost 24/7 I make most of them. When you respond to a call and whether you have a major roll in the call medical or fire or even if it is in the smallest of ways (Directing Traffic) you help another human being. You can’t explain the satisfaction or the feeling you get for providing service to that person and the community. If you have the time and the interest think about helping your community consider volunteering with your local fire department as a firefighter or medical personel. I can promise you will not be sorry. Check out the station web site I designed it Sterling Fire Department Station 67 web Site www.sterlingfirect.com let me know what you think. I'll not complain, for its not my way but here are some things I'll ask. And please, Lord, grant them to me for the loved ones I hold fast. I will dare to ask because I know how you've blessed us in the past. I've learned to trust in your grace, O Lord, that's how I've come this far. So now, O God, I humbly pray hear this Fire Captain’s prayer. Please bless my wife and family -- so often left alone, They knew where I would be going and trust you to bring me home. And O dear God, bless my men I trained them as best I could. I tried to do your will with them and lead them as you would. I need to know your with them Lord, or else how can I stay, And peacefully enjoy Your place of endless day. Your heaven where there is no night, no fire to kill and burn I guess that's why it will be my rest, my place, and my turn. And Lord, be with my community and keep it safe as it can be, For all its folks are special, and very dear to me. They are all my friends, and by your grace I served them as best I could. So hear and grant this Fire Captain’s prayer, O Lord - I already knew you would. Amen.
