Created about 1 year ago
Description:
On July 1, 2007, after two weeks of heavy rains, the Verdigris River overflowed and destroyed 300 homes in the city of Coffeyville, Kansas. The flooding also triggered an 42,000 gallon oil spill at the Coffeyville Resources oil refinery. The South Coffeyville (Oklahoma) Fire Department assisted the Coffeyville (Kansas) Fire Department with Rescue Operations on the east side of Coffeyville along the levee. Flooding began shortly after Midnight when the levee over topped. Around 4:00 am the oil spill occurred. During Rescue Operation over 50 Water Rescues were performed by the Coffeyville and South Coffeyville Fire Departments in the first 12 hours of flooding. In the following days the water supply was exhausted as the pumping station was inundated with flood water. Firefighters from Coffeyville and South Coffeyville remained on emergency operations for over 408 hours straight till the water receded and the water supply returned to service.
